Featured Snippets: A Practical SEO Guide

Reviewed 5 October 2026. Featured snippets can highlight a useful answer from a web page in Google Search. Google chooses when to show one; there is no setting, schema type or guaranteed formula that secures a placement. This guide explains how to make your content clearer and more useful as part of your SEO strategy.

What is a featured snippet?

A featured snippet presents an extracted answer ahead of the usual page title and link. It may use a paragraph, list or table. It is different from a normal search snippet, a structured-data rich result and an AI Overview.

Answer the question clearly

Start with questions your customers actually ask. Give a direct answer beneath a descriptive heading, then explain the details, evidence and limitations. Use numbered steps for a process, a list for related items and a table when readers need to compare options. Choose the format that helps the reader.

Support answers with useful detail

Add original examples, relevant experience and links to reliable sources. State dates and conditions for claims that may change. Avoid inventing statistics or padding a short answer to reach a supposed ideal word count. Google’s documentation does not specify one minimum snippet length for every query.

Understand what markup can do

You cannot mark a page as a featured snippet. Meta descriptions describe a page but do not nominate it for a placement. Use accurate structured data where it is relevant to the visible content and supported search features; do not add FAQ or HowTo markup expecting it to create a featured snippet.

Google retired HowTo rich results in 2023 and FAQ rich results from 7 May 2026. Helpful questions and answers still belong on your page when they help customers, regardless of search-result enhancements.

Measure useful outcomes

Review the queries, clicks and impressions for the page in Search Console. Compare changes over a meaningful period and assess enquiries or sales alongside traffic. Search appearances can vary by query, location and device, so a single manual search does not prove consistent visibility.
